 It's all in the name......

At Perth Pet Vet we see a lot of chickens and are continually surprised at how inventive their humans can be when it comes to naming their flock.
Some of our favourites are:
  • Princess Layer and Obe Wan Henobie whose people are huge Star Wars fans.
  • Joan Snow inspired by Game of Thrones
  • Jung Chook whose mother loves Jung-Kook of K-Pop band BTS fame.
  • Heather Flocklear and Bruce Wingsteen.

The beautiful lady pictured here is Chickadee.
We also have the pleasure of treating the very spoilt cats Lucifurr and Mr Meowgi, as well as a Border Collie aptly named Fly.
We'd love to hear some of the clever (or cute) names you have come up with for your animal companions
🙂

 Say nope to rope!

We had a weiro come to visit us recently as he was seen to be vomiting after meals, and although having a decent appetite he appeared to be losing weight. Dr Nima did a thorough examination and was able to palpate an approximate 10mm foreign body in the crop. The crop is an elastic pouch located on the front of a bird’s neck. It forms part of the digestive tract and serves as a storage place for food. The foreign body was blocking the crop and therefore no food was able to get into his digestive system.

The owners were advised that the impaction was unlikely to be resolved by conservative measures and that surgery was the best course of action due to the size of the foreign body.

During the procedure the crop was found to be heavily impacted, and Dr Nima removed a huge 6-gram foreign body from his crop. The removed impaction contained fibres and thread likely from a toy or items of fabric in the home.

This little guy is now recovering nicely and is sure to enjoy his next feed!

Here at PPV we strongly discourage the use of any rope based toys for birds (or even your other furred critters), as the threads can be ingested and cause intestinal issues for your pet. Keep an eye on what your bird might be chewing at home to keep them safe!
